Create & Print Your Personalized Photo Books ~ VioVio Calendar Review and $25 GC Giveaway

vio7I love photo books, photo calendars, and photo cards. Basically anything that I can personalize with pictures of my family, I love!! I had never heard of VioVio, and I was excited to try them out!

“One could argue that your photographs are your most prized possession. Their worth can’t be measured in dollars, and most people would grab as many photographs as they could from a burning house. Photographs are an irreplaceable record of your life, of family and friends, of events which mark the time line of your life.

vio

Viovio is the place where you can share your life and the wonderful journeys that color your living. We are an online community designed for photographers (professional and novice), travel enthusiasts, and those who want to combine the two. We provide you a place to upload photos, create vio2travel blogs, create photo books, and exchange information about your favorite places and memorable adventures.”

It usually takes quite a bit of time for me to make a photo book since I like to have everything perfect before I order. That is why I decided to make a Photo Calendar at VioVio. I figured it would be quicker and also, I have wanted to get a photo calendar for a long time so I figured now was that time!

vio4

My calendar really was very quick to make. All I had to do was upload the photos that I wanted (luckily we just had family pictures taken in October so I had the perfect photos to include!) and add them to the free 2012 calendar template. You can also purchase pre-made templates that other users have uploaded, but I chose to just go with the free one. Once my vio3photos were uploaded, the process took about 10 minutes. I was really excited when my calendar arrived. It looked great, my photos were all in the correct place, and I am very happy with the results. Now I get to see my cute family on my kitchen wall instead of random pictures of trees and birds (you know…that come on most of the free calendars you receive in the mail Winking smile). The only thing I would change is to add holidays to the calendar but it’s not a huge deal. VioVio makes it so easy to share your photos in several different ways!

Things that are BRAG WORTHY:

  • You can print photo books, design calendars, & create photo greeting cards
  • Each item comes in several different size optionsvio5
  • Create your own templates, use the free ones provided, or purchase pre-made templates designed by other people.
  • Photo Books are available in Softcover, Hardcover, Die-Cut, Imagewrap, and more.
  • Drag & drop your photos for fast & easy designing
  • You can even sell what you design on the website!
  • So affordable!

Brag Worthy Christmas ~ My Monster Burrufu Children’s Book Review

Seven-year-old Olivia has just moved to a new house — the same house where a
lonely monster named Burrufu lives hidden in a secret attic. One night, unable
to resist the smell of delicious cookies, Burrufu sneaks out and is discovered
by Olivia. The two soon learn that you can find friendship in the most
unexpected places. ‘My Monster Burrufu’ is a story of overcoming fear, a curse,
and a most unusual monster who learns from a little girl how to trust his heart.

I was so excited to read this book.  I thought that the cover art for this book was adorable.  I was excited to discover that this book had many great pictures in it.  The illustrations are so cute and have so much personality.  Alessandra Sorrentino did an amazing job with pictures.  With the amazing pictures and fabulous writing, I loved reading My Monster Burrufu!

The main character in this book, a little girl named Olivia was so cute!  She is hyper, happy little girl with a great love of cookies.  In a majority of the book, Olivia has cookies with her.  I love how developed the character is.  By the end of the book, I felt like I really knew Olivia.  A major reason for this is the great writing by the author, Alberto Corral.

One of the main lessons from this book is to not judge a person or a monster by its outside.  In the book, Olivia meets a monster named Burrufu who lives in her attic.  Burrufu does not like being around people because he is afraid of scaring them.  This has also made Burrufu very grumpy.  Olivia accepts Burrufu for who he is and it turns into a wonderful friendship.  I think that this is a great book to be an example of how we should treat people who are different.

This is a great children’s book for the whole family!  It is a great book for middle grade elementary school students to read by themselves, but it would be a great read-aloud for the family to read together.  I think that books are great Christmas gifts and this would be a fabulous children’s book to get for Christmas!  It is available for purchase on Amazon.

My Monster Burrufu gets bragging rights!

Brag Worthy Christmas ~ Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Power of Giving: A Christmas Story Book Review

image

We have a fun tradition of reading Christmas books each night in December.  So each year we get a new book to add to our collection.  This year I decided to add Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Power of Giving: A Christmas Story.  We have a couple other Howard B. Wigglebottom books and love them.  This one is no different.  It has a wonderful message of giving which I really want to instill in my children.  I am always looking for new ways to teach them it is better to give than to receive.  This Christmas children’s book is a great way to communicate giving to your child in a way they understand and can relate to.

This is a great Christmas gift for your kids and family this year!

Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen and Howard B. Wigglebottom and The Monkey on His Back Children’s Books Review and Book of Choice Giveaway [CLOSED]

HBW1_FrontCov

Right away I was very impressed with the We Do Listen Foundation and how much they help young children.

Project4

I was sent two of their books to review.  I chose Howard B. Wigglebottom Learns to Listen because Bug has been having a hard time listening to us lately.  This book teaches your child to listen and how important it is.

I also choose Howard B. Wigglebottom and the Monkey on His Back because it is a story that teaches your child to tell the truth.  We don’t have a problem with Bug lying yet, but I want to make sure we teach him now that the truth is always the best way.HBW6_Cover

Right off I was so impressed with how well Bug responded to both books.  He was immediately intrigued just looking at the cover.  He listened intently as I read each book to him.  But I was amazed when the story ended and he said to me “We should make good choices” and “I will listen to you mommy”.  Wow!  They made quite an impression on him :)   I am very happy about that.  As a parent I love these books.  They are well written, adorably illustrated and provide such great lessons to your children.

If I Have To Tell You One More Time…A Must Read Parenting Book by Amy Mcready

bookcover

Put an end to painful power struggles with your children!

“Why is it so difficult sometimes to get kids to listen? You ask your child to turn off the TV, do her homework, or get ready for school or bedtime. You know he heard you, but he ignores you. You ask again and still…no response. You’ve tried everything-time-outs, nagging, counting to three-and nothing seems to work.

In If I Have to Tell You One More Time…, founder of the popular online parenting course Positive Parenting Solutions Amy McCready presents a nag- and scream-free program for compassionately, yet effectively, correcting your children’s bad behavior.

In this invaluable book, McCready shows parents how an understanding of the psychological theory espoused by Alfred Adler (1870-1937) can put an end to power struggles in their households. Adlerian psychology focuses on the central idea that every human being has a basic need to feel powerful-with children being no exception to the rule. And when this need isn’t met in positive ways, kids will resort to negative methods, which often result in some of the most frustrating behavior they exhibit. If I Have to Tell You One More Time… provides the knowledge and tools parents need to address the deeper issues that inspire their children to misbehave. Read this book and rediscover the joy of parenting!”

A sought-after parenting expert, Amy has appeared on NBC’s Today, Rachael Ray, MSNBC’s Dr. Nancy, and elsewhere. A regular parenting contributor for the "Mom Blogs," Amy lives in Raleigh, North Carolina, with her husband and two sons.”

I am a big fan of Amy McCready!  I took her online parenting courses at Positive Parenting Solutions and got immediate results bookcoverusing her tools and insights. In fact we had a bedtime battle every night.  Until I took Amy’s Bedtime Blues course and we finally knew how to handle the problem.  Both my husband and I were amazed by the results!

So when I heard she had a parenting book I knew I had to have it!  I couldn’t wait to read it.  As I read each chapter I learned so much about myself and my husband as parents.  The methods we were using with Bug were not working.  As I started implementing Amy’s methods and advice I saw fabulous change in all of us.  We all communicate so much better and our home is a happier place.  I highly recommend this book to ALL PARENTS!  It is a must read in my opinion.  Amy really knows what she is talking about!

The Magic Warble Book Review and Prize Pack Giveaway [CLOSED]

Dwarfs, gnomes, fairies, talking animals, and an evil queen – all these and more can be found in The Magic Warble, an enchanting tale of adventure and friendship.

Twelve-year-old Kristina Kingsly feels like the most unpopular girl in her school. The kids all tease her, and she never seems to fit in. But when Kristina receives an unusual Christmas gift, she suddenly finds herself magically transported to the land of Bernovem, home of dwarfs, gnomes, fairies, talking animals, and the evil Queen Sentiz.

In Bernovem, Kristina not only fits in, she’s honored as “the chosen one” the only one who can release the land from Queen Sentiz’s control. But it’s not as simple as it seems. To save Bernovem, she must place the gift she was given, the famous “Magic Warble” in its final resting place. And she must travel through the deep forest, climb a treacherous mountain, and risk capture by the queen’s “zelbocks” before she reaches her destination. Guided by her new fairy friends, Clover and Looper and by Prince Werrien, a teenage boy, as well as an assortment of other characters, Kristina sets off on a perilous journey that not only tests her strength but her heart.”

I really enjoyed reading the book, The Magic Warble.  I thought it was a fun, fantasy adventure.  It was a very easy read and I read it pretty quickly.

I really liked the characters in the book.  My favorites were Prince Werrien and Kristina’s pet rat, Raymond.  In the magical world of Bernovem, Raymond can talk.  I felt that Ms. Simcox really captured the personality of a rat in Raymond’s personality and voice.  He could be timid but also brave.

I really liked that there were many different plot twists in the book.  I felt like that I had the characters really figured out and then they would do something to surprise me!

At first, I was really disappointed by the ending but then I realized that there is a sequel so the ending makes a lot of sense now!

The Magic Warble is a great story that kids will enjoy!

Memories of when her child was so precious and new to her begin to resurface – and one thought occupies her mind, “How much the little outfit reminds her of how tiny her baby was not so long ago” If only there were a way to keep the memory of such a special time in a mother’s life close to her every single day.

Max Quick: The Pocket and the Pendant Book Review

“When time stops all over the world, creating ‘the Pocket’ of time
wherein basic physics are strangely altered, only Max Quick and a few
other kids seem to unaffected.  While the rest of the world remains
frozen around them, Max — and Casey, Ian and Sasha — find that it is
up to them to discover how this has happened and reverse it. Along the
way, they encounter ‘quantum’ Books, ancient artifacts and other clues
to the riddle of stopped time.  And Max finds that his own true
identity may not be what he once believed.  Now he must embrace his
past to save the future and prevent the very world from being altered
forever …”

I love young adult novels and was very curious about reading Max Quick: The Pocket and the Pendant.  I was intrigued with the concept of time stopping in the world, except for a few certain people.  The way that the book really ‘sucked’ me in was the fact that we did not know Max’s true identity.  I wanted to know who or even what he was.

One thing that I liked was that Mr. Jeffrey had good control over the story.  There are many different things going on in this book and the book could have been a huge mess!  Events in the book are resolved well and have meaning to the overall plot.  I hate it when I read books and things happen that do not help the story move along.  This book did not do that.

My favorite thing about this book was the characters’ means of travel.  They can run really fast.  It is explained with physics concepts in the book, it is hard to explain!  I also like that they move to different places by ‘entering’ books.

I will say that this is probably one of the strangest books I have read in a long time.  I did enjoy it though.  I was excited to find out that it is a series.  I am very interested in reading the next in the series.  I think middle school kids and even some younger kids will enjoy it as well!

Do not just take my word for it!  Max Quick has been getting some great recognition!  It is a 2011 Junior Library Guild Selection and was mentioned by Oscar nominated address, Abigail Breslin in a recent interview.  She says it is one of her favorites.

Max Quick is available in stores and online.  For more information, you can go to the Max Quick Series Website.

Blurb Blog Book Review and Giveaway (10 Winners!) [CLOSED]

I enjoy keeping journals. I have my personal journal, my kids journals, and I also consider my personal blog as our ‘Family Journal’. Now that I have been blogging for over 4 years, I thought it was time to get me a hard copy. I needed a Blog Bookblurb….I needed a BLURB blog book!!!

“Blurb is a company and a community that believes passionately in the joy of books – reading them, making them, sharing them, and selling them.

Holding a finished book with your name on the cover is a truly amazing feeling; it’s one of those experiences everyone should have. As software people, designers, and publishing professionals at the top of our game, we realized something both incredible and obvious:

there’s no good reason why it should take tons of time, technical skills, big bucks, or friends in high places to publish a book. Or a zillion books, for that matter.”

blurb3

I was really excited to get started on making my blog into a book!! Blurb has a software that I installed onto my computer that allowed me to ‘SLURP’ my blog into the beginning of a book. My blog posts were put into templates and it was a quick & easy process. Blurb allowed me to make the book as simple or as difficult as I wanted it to be. I didn’t have a lot of time, so I basically let Blurb take the reigns. I did have to go through the whole book to make sure the correct pictures were with the correct post…..and a lot of them were off, but I got it figured out. It did take some time though because my book was so large.

I loved that I was able to choose exactly which posts I wanted to be in my book. I took some out because they weren’t really important or relevant to the family. It was as easy as unchecking a box. I blurb1added some colored pages & colored text & did some spell checking & after a few nights of working on it, I was ready to order. The shipping was quick & I really love my book (and so does everyone who sees it). I plan on doing one every year from now on. I can’t wait to have my own little library of ‘Blog Books’!!

blub3blurb2

Don’t have a blog? No worries. With Blurb, you can make Photo Books, Wedding books, cookbooks, and more!! They have a several different sizes available so you aren’t limited, & they have 3 different papers to choose from so you get exactly what you want. You also have the option of hard cover, soft cover, image wrap & more.

Mixbook Photo Book Review and Giveaway [CLOSED]

I use to have serious envy when I heard all my friends were making cute hardbound books with pictures of their kids in them. I have always been a ‘scrapbooker’, and since I do mostly digital, I have always wanted to make a digital scrapbook with all of my layouts. However, I have never been caught up on my kids’ pictures and I always thought making a book would take up more time than I could give it….so I never tried.

Lucky for me, I was able to make a photo book of my Son’s first year through Mixbook!

“Mixbook is the easy and fun way to make completely customizable photo books, cards, and calendars on the web – for free. With Mixbook, you aren’t limited to static pre-designed templates – our powerful design software gives you the freedom to lay out and design your creations to your heart’s content. We’ve dedicated ourselves to bringing you the best experience in creating photo products so that you can make keepsakes that truly reflect your vision. With Mixbook, you can truly Make It Yours™.”

mixbook4

Mixbook is perfect for:

  • Photo Books – the world’s most customizable photo books, with gorgeous professional designs for books about your wedding, baby, family, vacation, school, sports team, and more!
  • Photo Calendars – the best way to capture your year in memories to keep or share as a gift, Mixbook’s calendars are fully customizable – you can even add your own events or photos to the calendar grid!
  • Birth Announcements, Invitations and Stationery – the first site on the web that allows you to make gorgeous cards and stationery that are truly personalized to you!
  • Digital Scrapbooking – with thousands of free designs and complete customizability, Mixbook is the best digital scrapbooking site on the web!
  • Yearbooks – collaborate with parents, students and teachers to create the perfect yearbook for your school, sports team, group or company
  • Group Gifts – Mixbook’s powerful collaboration features make it easy to create a going away present for a friend, a birthday present for your co-worker, or the ultimate keepsake for your loved ones.

First off, let me tell you how easy this can be. If you have no knowledge of digital scrapbooking, Mixbook can pretty much do it all for you! All you really have to do is download the pictures. Online scrapbooking is definitely the way to go!  Now I can’t really tell you that it only took an hour to do my book….because it took MUCH longer than that. But only because I choose to do a lot of customizing with my own computer program. I started with a ‘blank canvas’. That’s why I love Mixbook so much!! They allow me the freedom of making my book JUST how I want it.

mixbook1I chose to make an 11 x 14″ Coffee Table Landscape Photo Book. It was quick & easy to start out. I didn’t have to learn how to navigate the website because it was so easy, and I was able to get started right away. The thing that took the longest was downloading all my pictures. Next time I do a book (and I will definitely be doing another one), I will only download the picturesmixbook3 that I for sure want to use….instead of downloading my whole folder!

There were so many layouts for me to use. From 1 photo to 21 photos, I loved having so many options! I was also able to chose backgrounds & stickers (that came pre-loaded) or I could have designed my own and uploaded them….which I did a lot of. It was simple to add text and I could even edit my pictures right there in Mixbook (which is great if you don’t already have a editing program). I ordered my Mixbook and was surprised that the DSC_0556shipping was so fast. It arrived at my house about five days after I ordered it. My book is absolutely PERFECT! I am so happy with the way it turned out. It will definitely be a keepsake for my son and I think he will love looking through it once he is older. Now I just need to make some for my girls.

Dark Days of Supernatural~ Unearthly and Desires of the Dead Book Reviews

“In the beginning, there’s a boy standing in the trees . . . . Clara Gardner has recently learned that she’s part angel. Having angel blood run through her veins not only makes her smarter, stronger, and faster than humans (a word, she realizes, that no longer applies to her), but it means she has a purpose, something she was put on this earth to do. Figuring out what that is, though, isn’t easy.  Her visions of a raging forest fire and an alluring stranger lead her to a new school in a new town. When she meets Christian, who turns out to be the boy of her dreams (literally), everything seems to fall into place—and out of place at the same time. Because there’s another guy, Tucker, who appeals to Clara’s less angelic side.  As Clara tries to find her way in a world she no longer understands, she encounters unseen dangers and choices she never thought she’d have to make—between honesty and deceit, love and duty, good and evil. When the fire from her vision finally ignites, will Clara be ready to face her destiny?  Unearthly is a moving tale of love and fate, and the struggle between following the rules and following your heart.”

Right now, the big thing in Young Adult literature has been vampires and angels.  The thing about the angel books is that the angel is always a cute, heroic boy.  That all changes in the book Unearthly by Cynthia Hand.  The heroine is a girl, a quarter-blood angel named Clara.

I really enjoyed reading this book.  It caught my attention from the beginning and I wanted to see if Clara would be able to fulfill her mission of saving the mysterious boy in her dreams.  Ms. Hand developed very likable characters in this story.  I liked that the story took place in Wyoming.  I could relate more because that is an area I am familiar with.  I loved the storyline of this book and the ending was so surprising!  I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

“The missing dead call to Violet. They want to be found.  Violet can sense the echoes of those who’ve been murdered—and the matching imprint that clings to their killers. Only those closest to her know what she is capable of, but when she discovers the body of a young boy she also draws the attention of the FBI, threatening her entire way of life.  As Violet works to keep her morbid ability a secret, she unwittingly becomes the object of a dangerous obsession. Normally she’d turn to her best friend, Jay, except now that they are officially a couple, the rules of their relationship seem to have changed. And with Jay spending more and more time with his new friend Mike, Violet is left with too much time on her hands as she wonders where things went wrong. But when she fills the void by digging into Mike’s tragic family history, she stumbles upon a dark truth that could put everyone in danger.”

Desires of the Dead by Kimberly Derting is the sequel to her novel The Body Finder.  I absolutely love these books.  This book is my favorite of Harper Teen’s Dark Days of Supernatural.  I could not put it down!  What I love about this book is the fact that I was so involved in the story.  I wanted to know who was behind all of the murders in the story.  I love the character of Violet in this book.  She has the ability to do amazing things with her ability of finding dead things but it is definitely a talent you would never want to have.  Ms. Derting has made it possible for you to understand what a burden it can be to have such an ability.  I also love the relationship between Violet and her boyfriend Jay.  It is so cute!

My only warning with this book is that it does say the ‘f-word’ a few times.  There is also some sexual content in this book.  If these things do not bother you, I definitely recommend this book!  Just make sure you read The Body Finder first.

Make sure to check out the other books in the Dark Days of Supernatural.  You can find more information and ‘like’ them on their Facebook page.

Celebrate Your Story ~ Gadanke Journals $35 GC Giveaway [CLOSED]

     journal2

Do you know how to keep a journal? I’m sure you will immediately say yes, but the truth is most of what we journal tends to be boring, and it’s usually more about other people than about our feelings.  We write about the mundane things in our life, what we did that day, what we ate…  But don’t stop to write about things like; what makes us happy, how certain places or foods make us feel, why we love the summer…  Most of us don’t know how to write a diary that will be interesting for others to read (or for us to read years down the road).  That is where Gadanke comes in.  Gadanke Journals will help you to be inspired to write your stories and life experiences in a new, fun and meaningful way!  Their Journals are unlike any I have ever seen!

gadanke

journal3 journal4

“A couple of years ago, NPR’s StoryCorp was in town.  It was also my grandma’s 90th birthday.  The two of us decided to hope into the recording studio to capture some pieces of her story.  I had all sorts of prompts to help her with her story telling.  (I was always the listener, the one who asked question after question.)  The only problem?  My grandma couldn’t remember.  Too much time had passed.  Later, my dad turned to me and said, “”Katie, I need you to write down your story.”"  I knew he wished he had his mom’s stories.  So I started writing.  I started wondering about all of the other women who have stories deep inside of them, and I started thinking about how my tendency to just listen and ask could help put those stories onto paper.  Gadanke was born with fabulous writing prompts and recycled papers.  I feel so lucky to be living my dream.”-Katie founder of Gadanke

What To Expect The Second Year Book Review and Gift Basket Giveaway ($75 Value!) [CLOSED]

64934992_b

Before I had my daughter I really wanted to read up on what being pregnant was all about and learn about the different stages and trimesters of being pregnant. So naturally I turned to a very popular book called “What to Expect When Your Expecting” by Heidi Murkoff. I learned so much from this book that when Leah was born I needed to know more!

Well since then I have learned a lot BUT having a toddler is still baffling to me and I need help! I couldn’t wait to read “What To Expect The Second Year” and get a glimpse of how my daughter thinks and does things.

The first thing that I really needed help on was my daughters eating habits. I couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t eat certain things or take 2 bites of something and say that she was done. Well you can find all of these answers and more in this awesome book!

I have tried in the past to serve veggies and fruits to my 2.5 year old BUT to no avail she would NOT even touch them! Well now I know why, I forgot the dip it of course! My daughter loves to dip anything and everything so why should that be any different with her fruit and veggies. We went over to my friends house for a play date and my friends daughter was eating some veggies with dip it, well of course Leah wanted to try it. I couldn’t believe my eyes, she actually ate 3 pieces of broccoli and a carrot dipped in ranch of course! I was shocked out of my mind. Well Heidi sure was right on that one! Anything is better with dip it.

Behavior:

Veggie is a four-letter word.

Explanation:

Besides the obvious control issues (“You want me to eat my vegetables, Mom? That’s reason enough not to”), it’s a matter of taste–really. Tender toddler taste buds are actually way more sensitive than grown-up ones, which means that broccoli really can taste yucky.

Solution:

Offer up those veggies (especially with dips–toddlers are huge fans of the dip), eat them yourself (tots love to model mom and dad), but don’t push the green agenda. Veggies don’t have a monopoly on nutrients–in fact, a juice slice of cantaloupe contains more vitamin C and vitamin A than a broccoli stalk. Sweet revenge for veggie haters! Ditto sweet potatoes.” (What to Expect The Second Year)

Another chapter I really enjoyed was the one about Behavior. I have a daughter who tends to hit when she wants to get her way or your attention. I always try and stop it right away and put her in time out BUT I needed to understand that it’s normal, but it still needs to be stopped right away.

Behavior:

Hitting

Explanation:

When you’re short on words (and just plain short), hitting says it all. Like “Move it buddy–you’re in my way!” or “I’m so frustrated, I have to slug someone!” or “Hand over the toy, and no one gets hurt … oh, wait, too late.” Since toddlers have little concept of other people’s feelings, hitting isn’t malicious at this age –when tots hit, they’re just expressing themselves, communicating one of the few ways they know how. Primitive, but surprisingly effective.

Solution:

Just because hitting is age-appropriate and even understandable, it isn’t acceptable. So show your toddler how to express him or herself the civilized way–through words. Stop hitting immediately and firmly by saying “No hitting, hitting hurts.” Comfort the victim as needed, then move on to another activity.” (What to Expect The Second Year)

This parenting book is such a great resource especially for those with toddler aged children. Heidi Murkoff also has a great video that tells all about this great new book which will be available April 15th!

What to Expect the Second Year picks up the action at baby’s first birthday and guides parents through the fascinating, complicated, sometimes maddening, always magical second year. Comprehensive, reassuring, empathetic, realistic and practical, What to Expect The Second Year is filled with solutions, strategies and plenty of parental pep talks. Quite simply, tWhat to Expect The Second Year is a must have for any parent of a toddler. Written in an easy-to-access, topic-by-topic format this book features chapters on growth, feeding, sleeping, behaviors of every conceivable kind, discipline (including teaching right from wrong) and keeping a toddler healthy and safe. Thinking of traveling with a toddler in tow? There’s a chapter for that too:).” (What To Expect website)

Things that are Bragworthy:

  • Literally a chapter for every stage of a 12-24 month old toddler!
  • Great info ranges from biting, feeding, growing, sleeping etc.
  • Heidi is the author of many other great books that I have read and really love!
  • Great book to have for your library

Inconceivable Book Review ~ “A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn’t Keep, and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift”

“You’re probably aware of the story. The couple approached an IVF transfer in February 2009, but they never imagined the outcome. The pregnancy test was positive, but the clinic had transferred the wrong embryos. Carolyn was pregnant with someone else’s baby. How could a mistake of this magnitude happen? Inconceivable provides an inside look at how modern medicine could produce such a tragic mistake, and the many legal complications that ensued with both the genetic family and the clinic. Included in the book are the news-making details on how the embryo mix-up happened and was discovered, an update from the Savages on Logan’s first birthday, and the conclusion of their legal battle with the clinic that made the mistake.”

3d_book

When I first heard about the book Inconceivable by Carolyn and Sean Savage, I have to admit I hadn’t heard their story.  Apparently I was hiding under a rock at the time it all happened, considering all the news stories and their numerous TV appearances, LOL.  I didn’t quite know what to expect from the book.  I love reading fiction but sometimes struggle with keeping my attention in non-fiction books.  That was not the case at all with Inconceivable.  I was hooked right at the beginning of the book and couldn’t put it down.  I read it in 2 days.  I cried for the majority of the book as you are following them along their emotional journey.  Their story is so amazing.  Their faith and generosity is such an inspiration.  I highly recommend reading their story in this book!

You can purchase this book online at Amazon.com.

*I received a copy of Inconceivable for my review.

LaRue Across America Children’s Book Review and Prize Pack Giveaway (2 Winners)! [CLOSED]

Ike’s plan for a peaceful cruise with Mrs. LaRue are thwarted when their neighbor, Mrs. Hibbins, falls suddenly ill. Mrs. LaRue suggests that she and Ike care for her cats while Mrs. Hibbins is in the hospital, inviting them along on the cruise. But cats aren’t allowed, and Mrs. LaRue decides to take them all on a week’s vacation of road-tripping. Ike is beside himself and quickly takes up his pen to tell us why!

Join award-winner Mark Teague on this romping road trip across America. Readers can follow along on the maps of the U.S. that span the endpapers. Teague drives us to the story’s satisfying conclusion, and we are left with one profound question: Can cats and dogs really be friends?

I am a big fan of Mark Teague’s books and illustrations.  He is the illustrator of the “How Dinosaurs…..” books and the author of the LaRue series.  I think that the LaRue books are hilarious.  I love having the books told from the point of view of the main character, Ike.  Ike is a dog so you can imagine how funny this is.  What is really great about these books is that they are not your normal storytelling books.  The stories are told by letters that Ike sends to different characters.  Most of the time it is to his owner, Mrs. LeRue.  I was very excited to receive, LeRue Across America: Postcards From The Vacation, Ike’s newest adventure.

What I love about these books are the language of the story.  I feel that sometimes children’s books make the language too simple.  I love that Mark Teague uses ‘big words’ and more adult language in his text.  It provides an opportunity for me to discuss new vocabulary with the kids in my class.

My favorite part of LeRue Across America was the humor in the story.  Poor Ike has to get along with his neighbors who happen to be cats.  Reading about the interactions between Ike and the cats were hilarious.  Some of the humor went over my kindergarteners’ heads but I was laughing!

The one thing that my kids really liked were the illustrations.  Mark Teague is such a fantastic illustrator.  There are so many different things happening on each page and there is amazing detail.  Just looking at the pictures in this book was fun.

If you have not read the LaRue books by Mark Teague, you are missing out!  This newest book is a great addition to the series!  You can buy it on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and in your local bookstore.

When I first bought my iPod touch, I thought it was going to be a great toy for me- well, it is, but there is someone else in the family who loves it even more than me- my 2 year old Harrison. He loves the latest app I downloaded- 123 Number Fun Children’s App The Great Snail Race. I love that he’s learning to count while “reading” a book {LOVE the “Read it to me” feature!}. I love using this app at the doctor’s office, on the plane, and most recently on our trip across the country as we move from TX to NY. Harrison got whiney, and I just passed back the iPod and he was totally entertained with number fun. I love that it’s not only a children’s book, but it helps kids learn numbers at the same time. This really is the best kids app!

The Secret Life of Ms. Finkleman Children’s Book Review

“Ms. Finkleman is just our boring old music teacher. Or is she? It all starts with a Special Project in Mr. Melville’s Social Studies class: Solve a mystery in your own life. For seventh grader Bethesda Fielding, one mystery is too tempting to ignore: Ms. Finkleman. Bethesda is convinced that her mousy Music Fundamentals teacher is hiding a secret life, and she’s determined to find out what it is. But no one is prepared for what she learns. Ms. Finkleman used to be . . . a rock star? Soon the whole school goes rock crazy, and a giant concert is in the works with none other than timid Ms. Finkleman at the helm!  But the case isn’t quite closed, and the questions continue to swirl for Bethesda. Could there be even more to the secret life of Ms. Finkleman than she already revealed? With the help of her rock-obsessed classmate Tenny Boyer, Bethesda won’t stop until she solves the real mystery of Ms. Finkleman once and for all!”

I had a lot of fun reading The Secret Life of Ms. Finkleman.  It was a very easy book to read and I could not put it down.  The characters and the story just really came to life.  Bethesda and Tenny were totally opposites but so funny when they interacted together.

Another thing I loved about this book was how much it relates to kids.  The language is on a kid’s level and the experiences that the characters go through are things that happen to kid’s on a regular basis in school.  It was fun for me to think back to middle school days and pick out the Bethesda or the Tenny in my class.  The kids also get together for a school assignment and make rock bands.  What kid does not want to be in a rock band?

The Secret Life of Ms. Finkleman is a great book that both kids and parents will enjoy.  It was also just nominated for an Edgar Award!

The Beginning Reader’s Bible Review

bible

“Using actual Bible text from the International Children’s Bible® as well as prayers, memory verses, and fun activities, children will love this large format and be engrossed in the intricate detail of the illustrations. Bible stories from the Old and New Testaments are included and stories are accompanied by a prayer for the child to pray, a verse to memorize, and a fun activity to help them grow.”

We were able to review the Beginning Readers Bible.  It has beautiful illustrations throughout the book and our whole family enjoyed them very much.  It isn’t all the stories from the bible but rather some of the stories from the bible.  And I want to clarify what is meant by Beginning Readers Bible.  It isn’t that it is easy reading necessarily, but more that it is more for a beginning Bible reader.  Meaning the stories are easier to understand and are condensed.   Each story is short and only a few pages long (with a few paragraphs on a page), making them perfect for a child’s short attention span.  Also each story has tips on how you can remember God’s word, Pray God’s Word and Do God’s Word.  I really like those as they teach your child to apply God’s word in their own life.  I think this is a great book for family’s with small children, we use it to teach simple versions of the bible stories to our 3 year old and are very much enjoying it.

*I received the Beginning Readers Bible to review from Book Sneeze.
