Are You Hurting Baby With What You Are Putting In Their Mouths? Born Free Pacifiers & Teether Review

NATIONAL BABY SAFETY MONTH – ARE YOU HURTING YOUR BABY WITH WHAT YOU ARE PUTTING IN THEIR MOUTHS?

September was National Baby Safety Month and Dr. Greene wants to warn parents about the dangers they may not know about when it come to what they are putting in their babies mouths.

Everyone talks about “baby proofing” your house and new parents are very careful about the products and gear they select for their new babies, from safety concerns to researching companies and the latest recalls. However, one thing that tends to get overlooked are binkies (pacifiers) and teethers. They tend to be those great basinet gifts at baby showers that people toss in as an add on gift with no concern about who makes them or if they are they safe.

Some of the major concerns with pacifiers and teethers are BPA and Phthalate chemicals found in plastics, proper teeth and gum development, choking hazards, etc. The NTP (National Toxicology Program) reports that BPA is more likely to leach from worn plastic items―like a trusted pacifier.

Some of Dr. Greene’s tips and suggestions:

· Pay special attention to the plastics that go in the mouth, especially those used to store, heat, or serve food and drinks. Chemicals in the plastics can leach out and enter your child. Notice the recycling symbols on the bottoms of many plastics. Opt for symbols 1, 2, 4, or 5. Or choose brands like BornFree, where the entire line of toddler sippy cups, pacifiers, baby bottles and plastic water bottles are free from BPA, phthalates and PVC. Or skip plastic, and go with something like glass or stainless steel.

· Pacifiers come in different sizes to accommodate babies’ different sizes. Most newborns do best with pacifiers designed for newborns, and preemies with those designed for preemies.

· Pacifiers come in many shapes and sizes. Orthodontic pacifiers have been scientifically designed to support the shape of babies’ developing palates and jaws. The flattened shape not only simulates the shape of a mother’s nipple when flattened in the mouth, but also encourages the most natural sucking action to help proper oral development.

· The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry solidly prefers pacifiers to thumbs for meeting children’s sucking needs (because pacifiers are easier for parents to control). I think pacifiers and thumbs are both fine – but bottles should never be used as pacifiers (this can cause terrible tooth decay). Nor should pacifiers be used to say, “quiet down!” without words, or as replacements for noticing babies or their needs.

· Keep in mind that manufacturers are not required to label their products with materials used or recycling codes. If you find an unmarked product, be sure to contact the manufacturer to confirm.

· If parents are worried about plastic teething rings, they can fall back on the old standards of letting babies suck on cold, wet cloths or fabric teethers.

This Sports Towel surprised me when I opened it. I was expecting a regular old beach towel, but it’s more like a shammy that you would dry off a car with. BACtrack S75 Pro Breathalyzer Review and Giveaway ($199 Value) [CLOSED]

So I have been looking for a breath alcohol tester recently and came across the BACtrack S75 Pro. It looked like exactly what I needed. It has law enforcement accuracy in it’s testing, so it’s not just some cheap breathalyzer that doesn’t work. When it arrived and I took it out of the package I immediately liked the design. It has a curve along the back making it very comfortable to hold. To use it you insert a mouthpeice (It comes with 6 different mouth pieces individually wrapped, so you can sanitarily have more than one user) and then you press the start button. Then it will start counting down a nd once it gets to 0 you start blowing into it for about 5 seconds. You have to blow an even amount of breath the entire time. Then it will double beep telling you that you can stop blowing. Then about 10 seconds later the results will appear on the screen. You should always wait at least 20 minutes after having a drink to use the BACtrack and get an accurate reading. Once we got the hang of it, it was really easy to use. I like having the BACtrack breathalyzer to be able to track my blood alcohol content. I found it to be accurate, easy to use and an overall great Breathalyzer.

My son is not happy unless he can see what is going on around him. Normally, he is pretty fussy during our shopping trips because he has to lay in his car seat. Air-O-Swiss Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier Review and Travel Humidifier Giveaway [CLOSED]

I haven’t ever splurged on buying a high quality humidifier. Not that I have one I wish I would have done so years ago. Let me back up. I have the Air-O-Swiss 7135 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidifier and let me tell you, I LOVE this to pieces. My favorite part has to be that it is digital. No more Not Knowing what temperature the water is at, I can see it easily. It is also programmable and has a timer so you can set it to run for a certain amount of time. I am so happy that it is both a Warm & Cool Mist Humidifier, this saves me time and money. Before I had both a warm mist and a cool mist separately (I honestly didn’t even know that a humidifier that did both even existed) so I had to switch them out depending on what I was using them for. I love having one that can do both. We live in Utah, so the air here is extremely dry especially in the winter months when we are running our heat all the time. Bug has dry skin and I have been running this humidifier in his room at night and it is helping a lot, I am so glad I have it with the winter months approaching. Last but definitely not least, this humidifier Pre-heats the water to 176 °F eliminating bacteria and the plastic housing of the demineralization cartridge is treated with silver (Ag⁺ Ionic Silver Technology) inhibiting microbial growth on its surface. Making it safer to use, which is a must have for our precious little ones!

Now that he has his “big boy chair” as he calls it, he can sit comfortably at the table like the rest of us. This booster is very safe since it has a 5 point harness seat belt so even very small children can be buckled in safely. It secures very well to our kitchen chairs. It has a strap that goes around the back of the chair, as well as under the chair. Making it stay securly in place. I love the look of this booster, it is so much better looking than the other booster seats I have seen lately (as I’ve been looking for one). It has a more sophisticated look. The colors are so bright and fun and with so many to choose from you can find the one that it perfect for your child and home. The seat is soft and cushioned as opposed to the other hard plastic booster seats. It is super easy to clean this booster, you just wipe it clean since their is no fabric to hassel with. Bug loves his new booster seat, it is the perfect way to transition from high chair to table. And it can fit up to a 4 year old. It is also perfect for taking on trips when you won’t have a highchair. And you can even take it with you when you go out to eat, but just to warn you, everyone is going to be asking you about your awesome booster seat! Summer Days can get really hot! Let me tell you, even with our AC cranked up my bedroom just can’t get cool enough (as it is on our top floor). Here are some great tips from Baby BanZ to help get your child to wear their sunglasses:

Wearing Baby BanZ sunglasses, just like wearing sunscreen or fastening a seat belt, is a learned behavior. Kids learn fast, but if you don’t teach them to wear sunglasses as children, they may never learn. Here are some of our suggestions on how you can get your child to love wearing Baby BanZ sunglasses. We recommend starting your infant at 4-6 months of age so they are as used to wearing sunglasses as they are a hat, coat or socks!

1) When you first put Baby BanZ Shades on your child they should be in the sun – not indoors. Many parents try to “get the baby used to the sunglasses” inside, but due to the darkness of the lenses, this can be scary as the child’s world has just gone dim!

2) Make sure the polycarbonate lenses on the Baby BanZ sunglasses are clean. If not, clean them with a lens cleaner and soft cloth. If you don’t have lens cleaner, soap and water will do. Just don’t dry them with an abrasive paper towel.

3) Center the Baby BanZ sunglasses so the nosepiece rests on the tiny bridge of the nose and the straps are above the ears. Adjust the neoprene strap to be just tight enough so that they don’t slip down, but not tighter. If they are too snug will not want to wear them.

4) It is normal, especially for older infants, to try to pull the Baby BanZ sunglasses off at first. But the more you put them back on and encourage them to wear them, the easier it gets. Start your child as young as possible. Remember that wearing Baby BanZ sunglasses for 5 minutes the first time is wonderful. It’s a new experience so build the time up gradually.

5) Set a good example by wearing your sunglasses, too! When mom/dad put on their sunnies, it’s time for baby to do so as well! You can make a game out of this by playing peek-a-boo or Simon Says as well so that baby copies your actions.

CARES Child Aviation Restraint System Review

I was sent the CARES child airplane seat belt to review and let me tell you what a life saver it is! First of I mean that literally, your kids are much safer with this seat belt than just a lap belt alone. But secondly carrying this belt verses a large car seat is so much more convenient. We traveled with bug last thanksgiving and I wish I would have had this then. But since I didn’t, I learned how hard it can be to keep a toddler in their seat using just a lap belt. It was a struggle the whole entire flight. And we were both exhausted by the end of it. Well then I received the CARES seat belt and couldn’t wait to try it out on our next flight. The second time using CARES was a completely different experience. Once I put it on bug he knew he wasn’t going to be getting up. Just like in the car, he was stuck. I was so happy to have some peace on the flight, and it wasn’t just because of the quiet. I also had peace of mind knowing bug was much safer wearing this CARES harness seat belt. And it is really easy to use it. It just slides down around the seat, you tighten it and then the lap belt loops through the bottom. It is also easy to adjust to fit your child just right.
