8 Best Disney Character Costumes for Kids

Disney films and their colorful characters still reign supreme at practically every fancy dress party. No costume party is complete without a Cinderella, a Little Mermaid, or a Mad Hatter! For your little one’s upcoming birthday, a Disney-themed gathering complete with cartoon-inspired costumes will never go amiss. For inspiration, we’ve listed our favorite Disney character costumes – some easily assembled, and some others that will have parents up all night sewing together to complete!

  1. Toy Story

Is the Disney-Pixar Toy Story franchise your child’s favorite movie series? Transform them into a Sheriff Woody, a Buzz Lightyear, a Jessie… or even an Alien! A quick search on Amazon will bring up dozens of Woody or Jessie outfits, while Google and Pinterest show lots of inventive ways to turn yourself into a green toy Alien from Pizza Planet.Maybe Dad can be Mr. Potato Head?

  1. Pirates of the Caribbean

Throw a swashbuckling pirate-themed bash based on the escapades of everyone’s favorite Disney pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow! Pirate costumes are super-easy to throw together – all you need is a black wig, a bandana, some ragged clothes, and don’t forget the eyeliner! Check out a great pirate costume list here to buy a brilliant pre-made set and get some inspiration. There are also adult costumes listed there so that Mom and Dad can join the fun!

  1. Peter Pan

Peter Pan and Wendy have been classic fancy dress costume inspirations since the fantasy-adventure cartoon came out all the way back in 1953. Peter’s easily-emulated green tunic and Wendy’s blue dress are simple to recreate. But let’s not forget the story’s real star – Tinkerbell – the sassy blonde fairy with pom-poms adorning her shoes that every girl has dressed up as in her life! Peter Pan costumes can be tracked down quickly online and in fancy dress stores.

  1. Beauty and the Beast

With the success of the live-action version starring Emma Watson, a new generation of little girls have become obsessed with one of the original Disney Princesses, Belle. Luckily, her iconic yellow dress is available to buy from all good dress up stores, leaving you to get the costume out of the way and focus on providing food and entertainment for the party!

  1. Alice in Wonderland

Alice in Wonderland’s flowing blonde hair and blue dress with plentiful petticoats is a well-recognized fancy dress outfit across the world. Alternatively, the evil Queen of Hearts also makes a great costume choice. As we said before, the Mad Hatter also gets an honorable mention, having been brought to life by Johnny Depp in the 2010 live action film. Backcombed red hair and an oversized top hat form the basis of a great Mad Hatter costume!

  1. Aladdin

Aladdin, Princess Jasmine, and the big blue Genie are perfect dress up outfits for a Disney-themed party and ones that people might have forgotten about. Rock up to a party as the Genie in confidence that no one will be wearing the same costume as you! Complete your effort with a black goatee, a magic carpet, and a golden lamp.

  1. Robin Hood

While your child is likely not a fox, the Robin Hood costume will be well-recognized by everyone; especially the adults in attendance who grew up watching the 1973 original cartoon movie! Deck out your child in a green outfit, complete with a feathered hat, a toy bow and arrow set, and a money bag filled with fake coins that they can distribute to the party!

  1. The Little Mermaid

Mermaids are all the rage these days, and it arguably all began with Disney’s famous Ariel. It’s easy to get ahold of a green mermaid tail and a red wig in fancy dress stores, or you could get creative and make up your own mermaid color scheme.

9. Encanto

This musical fantasy comedy film is very popular with kids. And in a birthday party this could make their day if you can manage them with some Encanto party decoration items. You can build the perfect party space using disposable tableware – like paper plates, napkins and cups paired with coordinating wall decorations and life-size character stand-ups from the movie. Choose a personalized birthday banner for your wall décor or personalized stickers as favors to add some enchanting style to the party.
