Polyurethane vs Epoxy Floor Coating: Which one do I need

Getting the right flooring is essential if you want it to last and be capable of all the things that are thrown at it over the years. If you need a tough finish then you’re probably debating between the best polyurethane floor paints and an epoxy floor coating.

Both are good choices. But, in order to make the right decision you need to understand the differences between these flooring types.

Epoxy Coatings

Epoxy floor coatings are generally delivered as a two-pack solution. One pack is resin, the other hardener. Separately these compounds can be safely stored for years. However, once you mix them you’ll have a short period to apply them before they set.

Epoxy floor coatings are usually applied to concrete floors. You’ll need to prep the floor first and decide which type of epoxy floor coating you need. For example, there are some designed to self-level, others are chemical resistant, and some are best described as impervious.

Epoxy floor coatings generally bond well to existing concrete and can be used to refinish floors that are starting to show their age. They are hard-wearing and difficult to mark.

But, epoxy floorings do change colour over time thanks to the sun’s UV rays. In short, it will yellow.

Epoxy coatings are easy to add to your existing flooring and give a hard, smooth surface that is perfect for many applications.

Polyurethane Floor Coatings

Polyurethane is described as a thermosetting polymer. This is because the interaction of chemicals generates heat and forces the compounds to merge and set. It’s the same chemical process that occurs when laying epoxy floor coatings.

Polyurethane floor coatings are generally easy to apply. Again, the existing floor will need a little prep. However, it’s interesting to note that this type of floor coating is much thinner than epoxy. But, thanks to the 60-70% solid makeup of polyurethane coatings, it is both hard and adaptable. In fact, it’s more adaptable than epoxy, making it better at absorbing impacts without causing damage to the floor.

This can be a valuable point, depending on what you are planning on doing in the space.

It should be noted that polyurethane floorings are not affected by the UV rays of the sun. It won’t fade or change colour over time. It’s also resistant to chemical spills and is abrasion resistant.

You can also choose between the types of finish on offer, such as high-gloss or semi-gloss. It allows you to get the perfect look for your floor.

Making A Choice

On the face of it, polyurethane floor coatings are the better option. However, the biggest issue with this coating is that it can’t be put on top of concrete. It’s also much thinner which makes it less effective at filling cracks in an existing floor.

You should also note that polyurethane floor coatings are generally high in VOCs, meaning you’ll need a respirator if you decide to apply the coating yourself.
