How to Plumb a Blocked Toilet

Few things are as frustrating as discovering a blocked toilet, especially when it happens at the worst possible time. Whether it’s a minor clog or a stubborn blockage, knowing how to fix it quickly can save you from stress and potential damage. This blog will guide you through the essential steps to properly plumb a blocked toilet.

1. Assess the Severity of the Blockage

Before doing anything, check how bad the blockage is. If the water drains slowly, the clog may be minor. Following flushing, if the water level rises, the obstruction is more severe than it was before.

Avoid flushing multiple times, as this can cause an overflow. If you suspect an object is stuck, such as a toy or too much toilet paper, you may need a tool to remove it. Understanding the severity helps you choose the best method to fix it.

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

If the toilet is close to overflowing, turn off the water supply. Find the shut-off valve behind the toilet and turn it clockwise. This prevents more water from entering the bowl.

If you cannot find the valve, remove the tank lid and lift the float to stop water from filling up. Keeping the water off ensures no messy spills while you work on clearing the blockage.

3. Use a Plunger

A plunger is the easiest tool for unclogging a toilet. Choose a flange plunger, as it seals the drain better. Place the plunger over the hole and push down firmly, then pull up slowly.

Repeat this motion 10–15 times to create suction and break up the clog. If the water starts draining, the blockage is cleared. Flush once to check if the toilet is working normally.

4. Try a Toilet Auger (Plumbing Snake)

If a plunger doesn’t work, a toilet auger (also called a plumbing snake) can help. Insert the flexible end into the toilet drain and turn the handle. This allows the tool to break up or hook onto the clog. Pull it out carefully, then flush it to check if the water drains properly. This method is useful for deeper clogs that a plunger cannot remove.

5. Pour Hot Water and Dish Soap

For minor clogs, hot water and dish soap can help loosen debris. Pour a few drops of dish soap into the toilet bowl. Then, slowly add a bucket of hot (not boiling) water. Let it sit for a few minutes to break up the clog. If the water starts draining, flush once to see if the blockage is gone. This method is gentle and works well for soft clogs like toilet paper buildup.

Call a Plumber If Necessary

If you’ve tried multiple methods and your toilet is still blocked, it may be time to call in the experts. Persistent clogs can indicate deeper plumbing issues that require professional tools and expertise.
