Causes of hearing issues linked to pregnancy

Progesterone, which is essential for maintaining a healthy pregnancy, increases in the body by about tenfold. These elevated levels can alter nerve cell activity in the inner ear, which may affect hearing.

The inner ear is highly sensitive to changes in blood flow, so hearing problems can sometimes be triggered by high blood pressure during pregnancy. That’s why it’s important to speak to your doctor if you notice any changes to your hearing. Elevated blood pressure may indicate preeclampsia, a condition that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated.
Headaches and migraines
If you’re prone to headaches and migraines, you might notice them more often during pregnancy. These can be accompanied by hearing issues, as severe headaches may damage the small hairs in the inner ear responsible for converting sound into signals for the brain.

- Dizziness and imbalance: Inner ear dysfunction related to hearing loss can cause balance issues or dizziness.
- Plugged or clogged ears: A sensation of fullness in the ears may also signal hearing changes.
- Everything seems quieter: If sounds feel more distant than usual, it could indicate hearing loss.
- Tinnitus: A ringing, buzzing or humming sound in the ears may indicate pregnancy-related hearing issues, as tinnitus is often associated with hormonal changes.
How to Take Care of Your Hearing During Pregnancy

It’s also important to avoid prolonged exposure to loud environments where possible and use hearing protection like earplugs when needed. Noise-induced hearing loss is absolutely preventable with the right precautions.

High stress can also have an impact on hearing health, as well as your overall well-being during pregnancy. That’s why it’s important to incorporate stress-reducing activities like yoga, deep breathing, or meditation into your routine where possible.
Stay hydrated
Proper hydration supports many essential bodily functions during pregnancy, including the auditory system. Make sure you’re drinking enough fluids throughout the day to support your hearing and overall health.
