4 Practical Tips to Care for Your Dog & Keep Them Healthy

Adopting a dog can be a great idea for countless reasons, and it’s easy to see why you’ll want to get one. But, you’ll need to be able to care for your dog and keep them healthy from the second you get them. This often takes a lot of time and effort.

But, it doesn’t need to be a major headache. Five tips can help you get started.

Have a Vet You Trust

You’ll already know your dog’s health will be vital to look after, which means finding a vet for when you need them. Take a little time to look into your options so you can find the right one for your needs. Looking into reviews from other dog owners and similar areas can help you narrow down your options.

Don’t overlook the likes of emergency vets while you’re at it. These shouldn’t be too hard to find, with some platforms (like here: https://veteris.co.uk/) helping you find them relatively easy. Once you have a vet, your dog’s health should be in good hands.

Give Them Exercise & Mental Stimulation

You’ll already know you’ll need to exercise your dog regularly once you have them. But, that doesn’t mean giving them a quick walk every once in a while. You’ll also need to give them mental stimulation, and different kinds of exercises can be great for this. It’s just a matter of putting the time and effort into them.

This doesn’t even have to be hard. Playing fetch with them and picking up a few dog games could be more than enough for this, and you could even end up having a bit of fun while you’re at it.

Create a Comfortable Environment

Dogs, especially rescue dogs, need and deserve a comfortable and safe place to stay. Make sure you put the time and effort into this before you even bring your dog home. This takes more than just dog-proofing your home. While that could mean spending a few hours on it, it’ll help your dog feel more at home.

Making sure the dog bed is comfortable, giving them space for themselves, and similar dog essentials should be a great start. Your new dog will feel more and more comfortable as time goes on, but it’s still worth putting the effort into early.

Spay and Neuter

Spaying and neutering a dog is one of the more overlooked parts of getting one, but it could be a lot more important than you might’ve thought. The most obvious reason for this is it helps avoid any unwanted litters. But, this is far from the only reason why it’s worth getting them done as soon as you can.

If your dog isn’t spayed and neutered, they could have more and more health and behavioural problems as time goes on. Nobody wants to go through these, so you’re better off spaying and neutering as early as you can.

You’ll need to take care of your dog from the moment you get them. While this can feel overwhelming at the start, it should be easier than you’d think.
