7 Common Reasons a Garage Door Won’t Close Properly

A garage door that refuses to close is frustrating and can leave your home open to theft. May halt mid-step, turn around, or not move. Fortunately, a vast majority of causes of these are easy to observe. The following are seven common causes of it and the procedures you can take to correct each one.

Blocked or Misaligned Sensors

This is the most common cause and the easiest to fix. There are photo eye sensors on both sides of the door, close to the floor. When something interrupts the invisible beam, the door will not close. Check this first if the garage door won’t close. Clean the lenses, remove any boxes or tools, and ensure that both sensor lights emit a steady glow.

Incorrect Close Limit Settings

This has a limit setting, which determines how far the opener will open the door. When the setting is off, the opener can mistakenly believe that the door has arrived at the floor when it hasn’t. The door then halts or comes to a stop in the same place every time. Refer to the opener manual and make the necessary adjustments to the unit’s limit by turning the dial or screw.

Broken or Worn Springs

Springs balance the weight of the door, enabling it to feel light. When a spring breaks, the motor used to open the garage door is likely to be unable to lift the entire weight. Grinding noises or the motor operating and the door moving very little may occur. Springs are tight and should not be repaired by the diy user. Contact the professionals immediately.

Bent or Blocked Tracks

Examine the metal tracks on both sides of the door. The rollers may get blocked with dents, bends, or debris preventing smooth gliding. At any moment, the door can get stuck because of an obstruction, no matter how small. Loose debris can easily be removed yourself. If the track is bent, it is best to have it professionally fixed and never try to push the door over the obstruction, as this can worsen the damage.

Frayed or Broken Cables

Cables are used to secure the door in the up and down position. If the cable becomes frayed or breaks, the door may only shut halfway or hang crooked. If cables are damaged or if one side of the door is lower than the other, discontinue use immediately. Cables that are damaged can be a hazard and should be fixed as soon as possible.

Cold and Humid Weather

Weather in the Twin Cities can be problematic. During the winter season, ice may accumulate along the bottom seal and freeze the door to the floor. The opener may attempt to close the door but will not be able to get free. Wooden doors can swell in the summer and get stuck in the door frame. The high temperature variation can cause less responsiveness too.

Worn Rollers and Hardware

Rollers and hinges are subject to wear. Worn parts will result in the door binding, shaking or stopping unequally as it lowers. Check for squeaks and wobbling rollers or loose hinges. Regular lubrication can help. Technicians can replace parts that are cracked or wearing out if they are about to cause larger issues.

Conclusion

If your garage door won’t close, it is most likely saying something very particular. Handle the simple checks first (more sensors, loose debris, limit settings), as they are easy to handle and safe. Don’t mess with springs, cables, or track repairs; these things are under extreme tension and should only be handled by a trained technician. Keep the door clean, lubricated, and check for any changes in sound or movement. If in doubt, get a local pro to call. Quick and calm action protects your home, your belongings, and your family, and it can prevent a small problem from turning into an expensive repair.
