Why is Rubber Mulch Better for Playgrounds?

This is a sponsored post.

For as far back as our grandparents can remember, they’ve always played on playgrounds carpeted with grass. The result is that skinned knees, scraped shins, and other “expected” playground injuries became part and parcel of their childhood – and for some reason, they are expected to be part of our kids’.

While grass in all its natural glory seems to be the logical ground cover for outdoor activities, it actually poses serious hazards. Along with rocks, wood chips, cement, and gravel, grass is an inappropriate playground surface. For starters, it doesn’t offer enough shock absorbency for falls (either from a height or from tripping). Grass can also harbor insects and small creatures that could bite and cause severe allergic reactions. The same can be said for weeds and fungi. Overgrown grass could hide small sharp objects, or an uneven ground covered by grass can cause a child to trip while running.

Just because the grass where a playground stands on looks immaculate and pristine doesn’t automatically mean it’s a safe haven from accidents. Injuries resulting from falls contribute to hundreds of thousands of emergency room statistics across the USA, and many of them are caused by improper surfacing. This is a preventable phenomenon – injuries can be nipped in the bud with smart choices beginning with the very ground your kids walk on during playtime.

Rubber mulch offers superb cushioning for falls by providing an added springiness to playground surfacing. A rubber mulch surface will give up to 16 feet of critical fall height protection compared to grass, gravel, or wood mulch. It can cushion many mishaps and help your child avoid fractures, brain trauma, and other playground-related injuries.

Another advantage rubber mulch has over grass is that it is skin sensitization-tested. The California health hazard branch of the EPA tested rubber mulch for skin sensitization and discovered that it does not elicit skin reaction in kids, even among those who have a predisposed sensitivity towards latex. One can’t say the same thing about grass and the things it may harbor.

If you are ready to make the transition from traditional grass surface to a smarter, more practical, and safer alternative, then you should give rubber mulch a try. New mulch coupons are available every day at mulchoupons.com, so you can have huge discounts on many rubber mulch products while making sure your kids stay happy and injury-free when they’re at the playground.
