What To Look For In A Mother Of The Bride Outfit

After looking for the bride’s outfit, the second most important outfit to look for is the mother of the bride’s outfit. In previous years the mother of the bride was expected to wear something that was neutral or washed out shades of beige. This would focus all of the attention onto the bride but wouldn’t have been very exciting for their mums! Thankfully things have changed in recent years and the mothers of the brides are able to wear anything that they would like to wear, and in a lot of cases, their outfit is something that is one of the most important.

Allow the bride to determine what you are able to wear

Choosing what the mother of the bride is usually determined by the bride, and it’s important that they give the thumbs up for the outfit that is chosen, no one wants to outshine the bride on her important day! It’s a good idea to have a discussion with the bride as to whether or not there is a theme for the day that you need to follow, or specific colours or styles that you should wear. Depending on who is going to be buying the outfit too, you might need to have a discussion with the couple about budgets. If the bride and groom are going to be paying for the mother of the bride’s outfit, then you will need to see what your budget is for the dress. If you are going to be buying the dress yourself, then you are free to spend whatever amount you are able to.

Think about the colour scheme

Talk to the couple to see if there is a specific colour scheme for the wedding that you need to adhere to, for example, some people may choose colours that tie in with the time of year, such as autumnal colours. This is a great way to allow the bridal party to match and add to the theme. It might be a good idea to wait until the bride has purchased the bridesmaid dresses or even go with them when they are shopping for them, so that you can be involved and know what to wear.

Accessories

Choosing accessories to go with your outfit is a great way to add some personalisation to your outfit and will allow you to stand out from other guests at the wedding. You could choose a hat, or even statement jewellery that will enhance your outfit and allow you to stand out.

Join in with the pre-wedding celebrationsIf you want to join in with the wedding celebrations and be part of the pre-wedding activities then you could join the rest of the bridesmaids when they are getting their hair and makeup done before the wedding. If your daughter doesn’t have a budget for this, or you prefer to do your hair and makeup yourself, there aren’t any specific guidelines for what the mother of the bride’s hair and makeup should be like. Just remember that you need to feel comfortable and happy on the day.
