Have a family sports day in the garden

One great thing you can do on a day when you’re not wanting to go out is have a family sports day in the backyard. This is something you can all take part in no matter your age and is sure to be great fun. Play games and have competitions with each other such as a long jump, running laps, an egg and spoon race and a 3-legged race. You could get medals for the winners and provide a little sports-themed picnic for after that you can all eat in the sunshine.

Play some traditional games together

Another thing you can do with the kids is play some traditional games together. These are always a sure winner and get everyone involved and spending time together too. You could teach them games such as how to do Sudoku, crosswords and more. You can also get board games out like Snakes and ladders, Monopoly, chess and checkers. Spend an afternoon just having fun, learning new games and spending quality time together. You could keep a scoreboard of who has been winning the most games too!

Have an at-home movie marathon

An at-home movie marathon is another great way of keeping the children occupied and doing something a bit different. Instead of just putting a film on, you could get the kids involved in making movie posters and film tickets to do some art and crafts beforehand. You can then get them to act like they’re really going to the cinema, where they can swap fake money for sweets and drinks, hand in their tickets and pick their film from the posters they’ve made. You can then all sit down together and enjoy a movie!

These are just a few things you can do that can help to keep the kids amused at home without spending a fortune. Just because you have the kids with you all day every day doesn’t mean you need to always take them out and do something extravagant. In fact, it can be that the things that mean the most are actually the days such as those listed above where you can just spend quality time together. What are some top ways you keep the kids amused at home without spending a fortune? Let us know in the comments below, we’d love to hear from you.
