Iconic Films Shot in South Carolina

South Carolina’s diverse landscapes, historic charm, and cinematic allure have made it a sought-after location for filmmakers. From romantic dramas to action-packed thrillers, the Palmetto State has provided the backdrop for numerous films and TV series. Here’s an exploration of some notable productions filmed in South Carolina.

1. The Notebook (2004)

This romantic drama, based on Nicholas Sparks’ novel, utilized several South Carolina locations to depict its 1940s setting. Charleston’s King Street featured the American Theater, where Noah and Allie had their first date. The picturesque Cypress Gardens in Moncks Corner served as the backdrop for the memorable boat scene with swans. Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant represented Allie’s summer home.

2. Forrest Gump (1994)

While the story spans various U.S. locations, many scenes were filmed in South Carolina. Beaufort’s Woods Memorial Bridge was featured during Forrest’s cross-country run. Hunting Island State Park doubled as Vietnam in several war scenes. The University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Performing Arts Center stood in for the Gump Medical Center.

3. The Patriot (2000)

This Revolutionary War epic, starring Mel Gibson, was extensively filmed across South Carolina. Historic Brattonsville served as the Continental Army encampment. Mansfield Plantation in Georgetown County portrayed Aunt Charlotte’s plantation. Middleton Place in Dorchester County hosted the British officers’ ball scene.

4. The Big Chill (1983)

A group of college friends reunites after a funeral in this ensemble drama. The Tidalholm Mansion in Beaufort provided the primary setting for the film. Bay Street in downtown Beaufort was used for jogging scenes, and Sand Hill Baptist Church in Varnville featured in the funeral scenes.

5. The Great Santini (1979)

Based on Pat Conroy’s novel, this film explores the tumultuous relationship between a Marine pilot and his son. Beaufort’s Tidalholm Mansion was used for the Meechum family home. The Beaufort Marine Corps Station and the Point neighborhood also featured prominently.

6. Dear John (2010)

This romantic drama, adapted from another Nicholas Sparks novel, was filmed largely along South Carolina’s scenic coast. Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried’s characters fall in love amid the serene settings of Charleston, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach. Dear John key scenes were filmed at the College of Charleston and Isle of Palms. The film also highlights the beauty of Edisto Island and its quiet, unspoiled beaches, capturing the Southern atmosphere central to the story.

7. Radio (2003)

Based on a true story, Radio stars Cuba Gooding Jr. as James “Radio” Kennedy, a young man with an intellectual disability who forms a bond with a high school football coach played by Ed Harris. The film was shot primarily in Anderson, South Carolina—where the real Radio lived and where the actual events occurred. Filming took place at T.L. Hanna High School, and many locals were cast as extras. The movie showcases small-town Southern life and highlights themes of community, compassion, and inclusion.

8. The Righteous Gemstones (2019–2025)

The Righteous Gemstones is dark comedy series about a family of televangelists that was primarily filmed in South Carolina. Charleston’s Citadel Mall stood in for the family’s megachurch. Other locations included the North Charleston Coliseum, Aviation Square Shopping Mall, and various spots in Columbia, Mount Pleasant, Ridgeville, and West Ashley.

9. Outer Banks (2020–Present)

Although set in North Carolina, this teen adventure series was largely filmed in Charleston, South Carolina. Shem Creek, Lowndes Grove, and the Eternal Father of the Sea Chapel are among the notable filming locations. The production moved to South Carolina due to legislative issues in North Carolina.

10. Mr. Mercedes (2017–2019)

Based on Stephen King’s novel, this crime drama series was filmed in Charleston. The Wagener Terrace neighborhood and King Street were among the primary filming sites, showcasing Charleston’s blend of historic architecture and modern amenities.

Conclusion

South Carolina’s rich tapestry of locations—from historic plantations and charming towns to lush swamps and coastal vistas—has made it a versatile and attractive destination for filmmakers. The state’s commitment to preserving its natural and architectural beauty continues to draw productions that seek authentic and picturesque settings. Whether you’re a film enthusiast or a casual viewer, exploring these real-life locations offers a unique glimpse into the magic of cinema.
