Listening to the Competent Newborn: How Erin Carroll-Manning Teaches Parents to Understand and Respond to Their Baby’s True Cues

A newborn cannot speak, yet every baby communicates. The question we ought to ask is if adults are listening closely enough.

A lot of parents, especially first-time ones, enter the first weeks of parenthood with mixed emotions. Joy, exhaustion, confusion, and more follow each other. Not to mention the advice that also comes from everywhere, including friends, relatives, and social media. It is often that all of this becomes pressuring rather than clarifying.

Newborn Care Specialist Erin Carroll-Manning reveals how the answer lies in paying closer attention to the baby. Her expertise in the field shows how babies communicate from the moment they are born, and not only in the ways we know.

Erin Carroll-Manning is the founder of Gentle Giraffes Newborn Care & Family Services, a pregnancy and postpartum agency that supports families through the early months of a baby’s life. She has spent more than thirty years working in the private childcare sector. Her career began with babysitting and later grew into professional nanny work. She became a Master Newborn Care Specialist in 2019 after completing a three-year mentorship program with Newborn Care Solutions.

The Traditional Way Parents Deal with Newborns

For decades, newborn care has often followed strict routines. Parents are told to follow schedules, track ounces, and think of weight as the gold standard of growth.

This has resulted in families relying on metrics like weight gain, feeding frequency, and sleep hours a little too much. These matter, but they do not tell the full story.

Research supports this concern. A report published by the Harvard Center on the Developing Child explains that early caregiver responsiveness plays a major role in brain development and emotional security. When adults respond to an infant’s signals, neural connections linked to learning and regulation grow stronger.

Yet many parents struggle to practice this approach. Erin Carroll-Manning sees this a lot. Many families reach out to her when sleep problems or feeding concerns begin to overwhelm daily life.

One parent describes it as, “I can’t say enough good things about Erin and Gentle Giraffe’s. To say that Erin came into our lives when we needed her most is an understatement. Our four-month-old son was not sleeping unless he was held, and my husband and I were at our wits’ end. Erin took a compassionate and gentle hands-on approach to teach and help us.”

How Erin Carroll-Manning Changes the Conversation

Erin Carroll-Manning approaches newborn care through the idea of the competent newborn. This concept suggests that babies actively communicate their needs through movement, sound, and body language.

She does not force strict schedules; she teaches parents how to observe patterns. A baby might show early feeding cues through small gestures such as turning the head or bringing hands to the mouth. The key is to understand these signals.

However, Erin emphasizes that these cues are only scratching the surface. Reflux, body tension, oral dysfunction, and breathing patterns are often part of how babies communicate. “Since babies cannot use words, their behaviors and body responses are their language. When we learn to read these signs, we are learning to truly listen,” she shares.

Right functional practitioners address root causes, thereby not just solving problems, but showing the baby that their communication matters.

“When babies feel heard through consistent, responsive care, they begin to develop trust in their caregivers, their environment, and eventually themselves,” she further explains.

This is how healthy nervous system development is supported. Through attuned care, appropriate routines, and respecting each baby’s individual needs, their brain and body learn what safety feels like. The first ten to twelve weeks of life are especially important. During this period, feeding patterns and sleep rhythms also begin to form. That is when guidance is needed to create healthy habits that support brain development and family well-being.

The Services Offered by Gentle Giraffes

Through Gentle Giraffes Newborn Care & Family Services, Erin and her team provide support for families during pregnancy and the postpartum period across New England and throughout the United States.

Some of the major services include:

  • Newborn Care Specialists providing day or overnight support.
  • Postpartum doulas assisting with recovery and household adjustments.
  • Overnight care that allows parents to rest while professionals monitor the baby.
  • 24-hour newborn care for families who need full support in the early weeks or months.
  • Consultations and sleep guidance focused on feeding cues and sleep patterns.
  • Travel newborn care for families on extended trips.

Care plans include support for twins, premature infants, or babies with medical challenges.

Erin’s training strengthens her efforts in the field. She has years of training and experience in , oral dysfunction, newborn sleep support, advanced twin care, and child passenger safety. She also trained as a mediator to help resolve disputes in domestic work environments. She has appeared in publications such as Parents Magazine, Consumer Reports, and the Boston Globe. In 2023, she was named a Top Five Finalist for the International Nanny Association’s Nanny of the Year Award.

Conclusion

The first months of a baby’s life shape both the child and the parents. Those weeks can feel overwhelming, but they are also opportunities for learning and connection. Erin Carroll-Manning believes the key is learning to listen to cues because babies communicate constantly. Newborn care is not just about meeting basic survival needs. It is about understanding that every interaction helps shape a child’s long-term sense of safety, trust, and emotional health. Through Gentle Giraffes Newborn Care & Family Services, she helps families make the early journey into parenthood healthier and more rewarding.
