"Remain calm, serene, always in command of yourself. You will then find out how easy it is to get along"

Being able to remain calm and in control of your emotions can be empowering. A sense of serenity and a quiet, calm energy can help you feel far more content. Anger and impatience are exhausting emotions and are very wearing for both you and your nearest and dearest. If you manage to remain calm, you’ll find you are better able to communicate, are more productive and may even lead a more purposeful life.

While this may seem easier said than done, there are ways you can help yourself to keep your cool. Try not to over-dramatize a dilemma or view every conundrum as a catastrophe. While some situations are stressful and can cause worry, not all molehills are mountains. Avoid the urge to assume that horrendous things always happen to you. This kind of generalization will only add fuel to your fire.

Examine your own patterns of behavior and try to ascertain whether there are any situations in which you always lose your cool. It may be a certain time of day or a certain environment that triggers your temper. If you know what flicks your switch, you may be able to react differently in that situation with a certain amount of control.

Sometimes rituals can help to soothe your mood. Taking a few moments to calm your mind can help you move through the various transitions of your day. Take a few deep breaths in the car before you catapult yourself into a busy household, chock-a-block with kids. Accept the chaos of children, and then clear away the debris once they’ve gone to bed. Kidspace make great space-saving, storage solutions for all the paraphernalia that comes with having kids. Once they’re firmly in the ‘land of nod’ enjoy some adult, clutter-free quality time that’ll help you calm your mind and relax more readily.

Try to take care of yourself too. Regular exercise and a healthy, balanced diet will work wonders for your well-being. A workout can help you control your anxiety levels, whereas too much sugar or caffeine won’t help you remain calm. Make sure you keep hydrated and you may find yourself feeling more alert.

Instead of brooding over the blows life deals you, distract yourself and find something fun or constructive to do. Laughter is the best medicine and if you can manage to lighten up, you’ll find your mood lifts too.
