Soft Water vs. Hard Water: Is There Really a Difference?

Only 15% of the American population has access to soft water. The other 85% has to contend with hard water which has several damaging effects such as spotting the dishes and blocking the pipes to affect the skin on your body.

So, what exactly sets these two apart?

Let’s break it down.

What Do We Mean By Soft Water and Hard Water?

Water is considered hard when it contains large amounts of dissolved minerals such as magnesium and calcium.

Now, hard water may not pose any risk to your health, but it can be a nuisance. That is because the mineral present accumulates on fixtures and makes detergent and soap less effective than they should be by preventing them from lathering properly. It also contributes to soap scum accumulation on dishes, glasses, and clothing

Note that the degree of hardness varies depending on the subterranean mineral levels.

Soft water, on the other hand, is very different from hard water and as you can guess, contains low levels of dissolved minerals. As such, soft water is much easier on your clothes and dishes.

You won’t need as much soap, and the water will barely feel sticky on your hands. Your skin will feel cleaner for longer, and you can go for a few days without shampooing your hair.

It’s also much healthier and safer to drink.

Signs that Your Water Could be Hard

The signs of hard water are easy to spot. For example, you should check your dishes and glasses for spots or a white film. Also, have a look at your faucets and showerheads. Can you see any build-up on them? Are they working as well as they used to? You can also check the inside of your tub or shower for soap scum.

If you see any of the above signs, your water is too hard for the detergents in soaps to work properly.

What to Do with Hard Water

If you are tired of hard water, you can soften it using a water softener, Herriman Utah.

A water softener will remove all minerals and other metal elements that might be present in hard water.

The water that you get from the softening process will be much easier to lather than hard water, meaning you’ll get to save more on how much you spend on water and general cleaning.

Soft water also reduces the scale that builds up in pipes and hot-water heaters, increasing their efficiency and reducing your heating costs. Scale build-up can be particularly problematic on industrial equipment and in steam boilers, which depend on good heat transfer.

Want to Soften Your Water?

Soft water is not just about drinking. It improves the performance of appliances, and it decreases your chances of developing certain health problems. Besides, it is important to know that hard water is not a health issue, but it requires more cleaning agents and can damage plumbing. That said, look for a water softener in Herriman Utah today!
