The new OralCam products from usmile that will change your family’s relationship with the dentist

We all know that one of the most important aspects of oral hygiene is not just brushing your teeth, but brushing them correctly and brushing them often, starting from childhood. Even well into our adulthoods, who among us can say they don’t hear from the dentist every visit about a missed spot here, an undetected buildup there, the “flip zone”, and every other opportunity for the common person to misstep on the way to oral perfection. Well with the release of the new D-series, leading oral health manufacturers usmile just may have a solution that can combat the embarrassment for good.

The D-series consists of two products: the D50 OralCam electric toothbrush, and the D-lite OralCam camera. The two can be paired for a comprehensive oral care system, or bought separately, but both are powered by the same competitive edge: a camera system that uses 405 nm violet light scanning and close up imaging to comprehensively help you see and target areas that otherwise might go unseen by the naked eye.

The D50 offers perhaps the most streamlined of the two products: an electric toothbrush with the camera and scanner embedded right in the handle. When it’s time to brush, you simply activate the device and follow the prompts on the in-handle screen, asking you to point the camera at your front teeth, your back teeth, etc. From there, the screen interface can immediately provide you imaging and photographs to reveal any problem zones or buildup in those hard-to-see areas. The information will also be uploaded to your paired app on your phone or smart device for further, long term review and insights.

Once the scan is complete, you have a variety of options for brush settings including of course a standard, a soft mode for sensitive gums, a mode that promotes whiteness, etc. But the most exciting one for the consumer who is particularly passionate about keeping their whites pearly is almost undoubtedly “Snipe” mode, which uses the data from your scan to specifically power the bristles in a customized way for your mouth. Plaque starting to build up in a certain area? Put the D50 in that spot and the bristles will automatically start going faster. Put them in a cleaner spot like the front teeth, and the D50 will slow down so as to add unnecessary wear to the enamel.

The D50 OralCam is definitely a great choice for the adult consumer who wants a streamlined, accessible toothbrushing experience, but the most exciting aspect of the D-series for myself personally has got to be the other product in the line, the D-lite OralCam camera, a detached oral camera that allows for an even more comprehensive mouth scan. Why is a detached camera more exciting than a streamlined brushing device? One word: Littles.

Let’s face it, while mom and dad might be excited to get their toothbrushing game to its maximum potential, it might not necessarily be a kid’s idea of a great time. And, as many people you know can attest they had to learn the hard way later in life (not that I’m pointing myself out), starting those good oral care habits for your kids when they’re young can save a whole lot of problems down the road.

With the D-lite, mom or dad doesn’t have to rely on their young one to scan properly, or even at all with the diligence that they should. Instead, you can have them inspect their mouth intermittently with an oral camera that has a comfortable, none invasive mouthpiece, and send the comprehensive data to your phone or device to keep track of their oral progress yourself. There’s no need for them to be trusted with running their own personal dental exams, there’s no need for them to give up the Spider-Man toothbrush or the colorful foaming toothpaste, and mom and dad still get to monitor and stamp out any cavities before they form or plaque build-up before it gets out of hand.

Altogether, the D-series from usmile is truly a game changer for families or singles alike. If when we were kids we had the benefit of a dentist’s-eye view every time we brushed our teeth, many of our relationships with the annual dentist visit would be much different, as there would be far less to say. It’s too late for this reviewer to boast that I’ve never had a cavity or any dental problems, but it may not be too late to say I never will again, and it’s definitely not too late to say my young ones won’t.
