The SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water Review ~ Now Playing in 3D in Theaters

I attended an advanced screening of this movie for my review.  All opinions are my own.

NOW PLAYING IN THEATERS

My son is 7 and he watches SpongeBob pretty much everyday.  So when he started seeing the trailers for The SpongeBob Movie Sponge Out of Water, he let us know he HAD to see it.

“SpongeBob goes on a quest to discover a stolen recipe that takes him to our dimension, our world, where he tangles with a pirate.”

We saw it in 3D as a family: My husband, my son, and my 2 year old daughter.

My kids really enjoyed the movie.  My son was glued the entire time and loved every second of it.  His only complaint was that he was hoping for the “Out of Water” part to be longer.  Other than showing the Pirate and Seagulls throughout the movie, it is just a short part at the end and the rest is the regular cartoon animation we are used to.  He would have liked to see a little more of the out of water animation.  I don’t blame him.  It is fun to see SpongeBob and his friends in a new way and I also would have liked a little more.  He loved seeing them as super heroes!

My 2 year old liked the show but did lose interest in the middle, she got a little restless.  Then they came out of the water towards the end and she was glued again.  If you have toddlers they will enjoy it but I wouldn’t expect them to sit quietly the whole time.  I understand I had a few moments when I wished it was over (just seemed to drag on at times).

But like I said, my 7 year old didn’t feel that way at all.  Right when it ended he said “Can we buy this when it comes out?”. So for him it was a movie he would like to see again.

As far as the comedy for the parents goes, it had quite a few funny parts and jokes thrown in for the adults.  I enjoyed them and was pleasantly surprised by how much I laughed.  It isn’t a movie I would want to see on my own but if your kids like SpongeBob it is worth taking them and you will have some good laughs as you watch.

As far as the 3D goes, there are a lot of fun effects.  Normally I don’t think it is worth the extra money but with this one I think the 3D effects made the movie even more fun for the kids. So I would recommend seeing it in 3D.

The SpongeBob Movie A Sponge Out of Water is rated PG for mild action and rude humor.
