The Struggles of Dating as a Single Parent

The Best and Worst Places for Single Parents to Find Love

Parenting is no walk in the park– though, if you have a kid under three, you probably do go on lots of walks in the park. The tears, tantrums, backtalk and messes are inevitably difficult, but even more so when you have to handle them on your own. Put simply: being a single parent is a tough job. Amidst the chaos, it can seem impossible to make time for a personal life. Everything needs to be carefully planned. Spontaneity isn’t an option– if the babysitter can’t make it, neither can you!

Finding a partner to tackle the challenges of parenting with you can be even more stressful than reasoning with a toddler at times. But, don’t lose hope! You may just be looking in the wrong place.

This analysis uncovered the best and worst places for single parents to date. If you live in the Midwest, we have some good news. The Midwest is home to many of the best cities for finding love while parenting. In fact, eight of the top 21 cities for single-parent-romance are in the midwest! Cincinnati, Ohio came out on top of this list, with a relatively low cost of living, affordable options for date nights, and a large population of single parents. So, venture on over to the Queen City, check out this list of Cincinnati-based date ideas and make the first move!

Southern belles and beaus, you may be in luck as well. Eight cities in the South ranked in the best cities for single parents, with reasonable prices for infant childcare and babysitters. There are plenty of fish in the sea– I mean, single parents in the South– but some cities have higher concentrations of solo parents than others. If you need help finding a fellow parent to date, you may want to take on Atlanta, Georgia, where the population is made up of almost 40% of single parents.

Ultimately, those who live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri and Florida are in the best position to successfully date other parents. These states are home to two of the best cities for single parent romance each. So, strap your kid into their car seat and get driving!

Even though you may ‘Heart NY’, single parents looking to ‘heart’ another parent shouldn’t expect much success in the Big Apple. New York City is reportedly the worst city for single parents to date. Not only is the city’s expensive nature hindering parents who have to worry about childcare costs, but there aren’t too many options to choose from. Solo parents make up only 6.6% of the overall population! If you’re a single parent in the City that Never Sleeps, you may want to consider joining a group to meet other single parents

The West Coast isn’t the best coast, based on these findings. California is the worst state for single parents looking for love: an astonishing five cities in the Golden State rank in the bottom 20 cities for solo parents! Chances for love are especially low for the California Girls, as the median annual income for single moms are significantly lower than those of single dads. This, plus the state’s high child care costs, may make dating for single moms a challenge.

The bottom line: finding love as a single parent is an already difficult endeavor, but location may play more of a role than you might think. Don’t be scared to travel and explore your options– single parents deserve a social life, too!
