About Penumbra Theatre
Penumbra Theatre was founded in 1976 by Lou Bellamy to create a forum for African American voices in the Twin Cities theatre community. Penumbra has achieved national recognition for its quality productions and role in launching the career of many respected playwrights, including two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson. Today, Penumbra Theatre is Minnesota’s only professional African American theatre, and is one of only three professional African American theatres in the nation that offer a full season of performances.

I have to be honest and say that I was actually a little nervous for our family to The Wiz- we’re huge fans, especially my husband. So what if was a dud? I should never have given that a second thought, though, because I’ve never before been disappointed by The Children’s Theatre Company, and of course we weren’t this time either! It was AMAZING. We were completely blown away with the singing voices. I felt like we were watching a Broadway production. They totally brought the story to life. Specifically my husband loves “Ease on Down the Road”, and he thought they did a fantastic job with this iconic song. The Wiz was so creative, so visually beautiful, and completely mesmerizing- it was over too fast! I could have sat and watched it all over again. You will be sure to love it, even if you’ve never seen it anywhere before- you will be captivated! Be sure to grab tickets for your family today before it’s too late!
