If there is one area where parents get consistently frustrated, it is not being able to get their kids to drift off to sleep at night. While there is no one size fits all approach that is going to work for everyone, you can increase the chances of getting your little one to drift off by taking on a few specific actions and following some steps that can make all the difference. With this in mind, here are a few pointers that can give you a helping hand.
Keep the nighttime routine consistent
Just as it is the case for adults as well, children tend to do better when they have a consistent nighttime routine that they are able to follow rather than allowing their sleeping times to drift all over the place. However, it isn’t only about the time that they go to sleep – it is also all about what you are doing on a nightly basis. This is where a little bit of experimentation is going to be needed. What may well work for one child will not for another. Ideally, you should combine together some soothing activities such as a warm bath, as well as activities like singing lullabies etc.
Make the sleeping environment as comfortable as possible
Second on the list, you can certainly do more in terms of looking directly at the sleeping environment of your little one and asking the question as to whether it is comfortable enough. There are a couple of key considerations that you can make here, but it ultimately comes down to whether or not the room is cool, dark and quiet enough. You should also look at the cot or crib that you are investing in and make sure that it does the job in terms of comfort.
Look at their sleeping attire
As well as the sleeping environment itself, you should also have a closer look at the sleeping attire of the baby to ensure that it is doing the job of making them feel comfortable and protected. A good potential option is to look into a baby sleep sack as there is no doubt that this could be a choice that works out well for them. As well as making sure that it is comfortable, you will also want it to be easily accessible enough in terms of the ability to change them and feed them during the night as necessary.
Consider how much they are sleeping during the day
While babies need to have regular naps during the course of the day, you should think about how often these are occurring and whether there is any way that they are negatively impacting how much they are able to sleep at night. Ultimately, you want to strike the right balance here to ensure that they are not awake all night long.
These are just a few of the main top tips that can certainly make a big difference in helping your child to get the sleep that they need.
