When Your Kids Outgrow Their Rooms Faster Than Their Shoes

You know that feeling when you walk into your daughters room and suddenly realize those princess decals and baby pink walls don’t quite match the teenager who’s now obsessed with indie bands and black nail polish? Yeah, me too. Its like one day they’re begging for unicorn wallpaper and the next they’re rolling their eyes at anything that isn’t “aesthetic enough.”

Last month I finally caved and decided to tackle my 13 year old’s room makeover. After scrolling through approximately 847 Pinterest boards (not exaggerating), I realized this wasn’t gonna be a simple DIY weekend project. That’s when a friend recommended JC Paint Solutions – and honestly, best decision ever. Sometimes you just gotta know when to call in the pros, especially when your kid has very specific opinions about sage green vs eucalyptus green.

The thing nobody tells you about kids room makeovers is that its not just about slapping on some new paint. Its about creating a space that grows with them. My oldest went through her horse phase, her astronomy phase, and now she’s in her “minimal but cozy” phase. Each time meant repainting, redecorating, and basically starting from scratch. Here’s what I’ve learned after three kids and countless room transformations:

Start with a neutral base – I know, I know. Boring right? But hear me out. When you pick a good quality neutral paint color for the walls, you can change everything else around it without having to repaint every two years. My middle child has gone through four different “themes” in the same room and we haven’t touched the walls once.

Let them have input but set boundaries – Your 8 year old might want neon orange walls. Maybe compromise with one accent wall? Or better yet, neon orange accessories that can be swapped out when they inevitably decide orange is “so last year.”

Think about lighting – This ones huge. The right paint color can look completely different depending on the light. North facing rooms need warmer tones, south facing can handle cooler colors. I learned this the hard way when my sons “cool gray” room looked like a prison cell in winter.

Quality matters more than you think – Cheap paint means repainting sooner. And with kids rooms that get everything from soccer ball marks to mysterious sticky handprints, you want something that’s gonna hold up. Plus good paint actually covers better so you might need less coats.

Consider the whole house flow – Your kids room shouldn’t feel like it belongs in a different house. Even if they’re going for a totally different vibe, there should be some connection to the rest of your home. Maybe its the trim color or the undertones in the paint. The biggest mistake I made with my first kids room was trying to create exactly what I saw on Instagram. Real life isn’t a perfectly styled photo shoot. Real life is backpacks thrown on the floor, art projects taped to walls, and that chair that’s basically a clothing storage system. Now when we do room makeovers, I focus on creating spaces that work for how we actually live. That means washable paint finishes, colors that hide the inevitable scuff marks, and designs that can evolve. My youngest is already planning her “big kid” room and she’s only 7. This time around I’m prepared.

Were starting with a soft neutral base, adding color through things we can easily change, and making sure the space can grow with her. Because if there’s one thing I’ve learned as a mom, its that phases come and go faster than you can say “but you just said purple was your favorite color!” The best part about giving your kids a space they love? They’re actually excited to keep it clean. Well, cleaner anyway. And honestly, seeing their faces light up when they walk into their newly transformed room? Totally worth every drop of paint and every Pinterest board. Just remember – their room is their sanctuary. Its where they dream, create, and figure out who they are. So even when they want colors that make your eyes hurt or themes that make no sense, try to find that middle ground. Because one day they’ll be grown and youll miss even the crazy decorating phases. Trust me on that one.
