Disney Publishing Apps Review ~ Don’t Let the Pigeon Run this App, Toy Story Showtime & Pooh’s Birthday Surprise

We recently got an iPod Touch and my 4 year old has been enjoying playing on it a lot. It has been fun discovering fun apps for him. We were given the chance to review 3 fun apps from Disney Publishing:

If you haven’t ever read the Mo Willems books to your kids I suggest you do. Bug is a HUGE fan of Mo Willems Pigeon books and Elephant & Piggy books. They are his favorite books by far. This app is based around the Pigeon books, particularly the “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” book. It is an adorable app and was an instant hit with my 4 year old. I like that he is able to use it and navigate on his own. He is able to create his own pigeon story by making choices. There is also an option for him to say his choices and it records his voice. He loves that. While he plays the app he just giggles and it is so cute to watch. There is a place where Mo teaches your child to draw a pigeon step by step. It’s very cute and Bug is always so proud when he finishes his pigeon drawings. I highly recommend this app, your kids will LOVE it!

Toy Story Showtime!

This app is a fun story and Bug really enjoys it. It reads the story to him and highlights each word as it reads. Bug can click on parts of the scene and fun things happen. It is great that he can click on the words and it will teach the meaning of the word to him. He can also play fun games and activities. He really likes this app and it is a great reading tool.

Pooh’s Birthday Surprise

““Pooh’s Birthday Surprise” is a Disney Learning interactive storybook designed to help children acquire and reinforce early literacy and pre-math concepts. As children read along with the word-by-word narration, they are invited to join in the birthday party planning with their favorite Hundred-Acre Wood friends. Ever since the new Winnie the Pooh movie came out Bug has loved all things Pooh. This app is no exception. It tells a cute story, reading it to him and highlighting each word. He can also click on things in the scenes and they interact. It is great as it teaches him pre-math skills like patterns, etc…A very fun education app.

I am loving the Totally Amp’d app and so are my kids. The appisodes are so cute and fun and we were immediately pulled into the story just from watching the first one. The activities are really fun, my kids love that they can record themselves singing (and I had fun with it too) and remix songs. They also enjoy making music videos and designing fashions for the characters.

You can download the app. for Free on iTunes, this gives you access to the first appisode and activities. Then you can purchase the full app (while in the app) for just $4.99 and this gives you complete access to all 10 appisodes and all activities.

This is an app unlike any other! It is innovative, creative and fun!

This app is going to be a huge hit with kids and tweens! Download it for your kids today, they will love it like mine do!

I love the new My Little Pony: Twilight Sparkle, Teacher for a Day App. It is so adorable! The graphics are so bright and fun. It is really great for engaging your child and keeping them engaged. I love that as the story is read each word lights up. It is a great kids app for learning to read.

Since I only have boys at my house, I had to enlist the help of my little sister to review this app. She LOVES it! Her favorite part is that she can customize her own story and even add in her own voice to the story. She really thinks that part is fun. She really liked the story and thought the games were fun. Even my little boy Bug thinks its a fun app. He likes to have the story read to him.

I find it refreshing to find educational apps for my kids. When they can learn as they play and have fun on my phone, I really like that. This is a really cute app with a cute story and I highly recommend it to parents to have on their (or their childs) iPhone, iPod touch and/or iPad.

Three Main Jar Types

1. The checklist or routine jar.

This jar gets completed each day. It helps you get to bed, or get out of the house in the morning. The goal is simply the last step of the routine: usually free time, or a backrub at bedtime. The actions are the steps. Bedtime Jar- bath, teeth brushing, pack backpack, clothes in hamper, tidy room. Goal: backrub

2. The Privilege Jar

This unlocks a one time privilege like a later bedtime, adding a dog to the family or getting a wii. Together you decide what actions it will take for everyone to demonstrate that they are ready for this privilege. To adopt a dog you might decide that for 30 days you will get up 20 minutes earlier (time for walk) lay out snacks for one another (to practice feeding dog) water the plants (to practice caring for living things) all without prompting. After 30 days if the marble jar is full your family will be able to celebrate with a new dog. Plus you get to enjoy all of that dog hair.

3. The “best self” jar

I am borrowing this phrase from the same kindergarten classroom that gave me the idea for the marble jar itself. I shy away from the term self improvement, but clearly I believe in it whole-heartedly. In this case you can use the marble jar to help frame the conversation about what it means to be a…good friend, caring brother, scientist, environmentalist, true collaborator. Then you take these big terms and break them into observable steps. Being a collaborator includes 1. asking questions 2. offering suggestions 3. deciding together 4. celebrating each other. 4. solving problems After you have described those actions you can all hunt for examples within the family. Maybe look for 8 examples of each action. When the jar is full celebrate with a trip to a ropes course.

Use marble jar to keep yourself on track, too!
The tangible incentive your kids are working towards may be a video game, but the long-term, natural consequence may be that they learn to cooperate, save money, play outside, respect each other’s property, etc.

When I first bought my iPod touch, I thought it was going to be a great toy for me- well, it is, but there is someone else in the family who loves it even more than me- my 2 year old Harrison. He loves the latest app I downloaded- 123 Number Fun Children’s App The Great Snail Race. I love that he’s learning to count while “reading” a book {LOVE the “Read it to me” feature!}. I love using this app at the doctor’s office, on the plane, and most recently on our trip across the country as we move from TX to NY. Harrison got whiney, and I just passed back the iPod and he was totally entertained with number fun. I love that it’s not only a children’s book, but it helps kids learn numbers at the same time. This really is the best kids app!

iTriage Healthcare App for Your SmartPhone

When it comes to Bug and his health I am overly cautious. I don’t like to take any chances. I seek medical treatment whenever I feel it’s needed (even if those around me don’t). I would rather err on the side of caution, better safe than sorry, etc…So I was thrilled when I learned about the iTriage Healthcare App for SmartPhones. It has so much information right at my fingertips on an application on my phone. I have an Android, but the app is also available for the iphone, ipod touch, and palm. (Coming soon to Blackberry). Using the app I can look up symptoms to see what my Bug might have. I can learn about procedures, and learn about tests and treatments. I LOVE this. If you have ever had a sick child or loved one and have had the doctor suddenly tell you they are going to run tests or perform procedures, then you know how overwhelming this can be. How can you make a decision with so little info or knowledge. Having this app on your phone or ipod gives you all the resources and information you need right then and there. You can look up the information quickly and easily. No more being in the dark.

It gets even better. The app can use your GPS to tell you where your nearest pharmacy, hospital and other treatment centers are located. I love having this app on my phone. It is such a useful and valuable resource. It gives me the comfort and peace of mind when it comes to medical situations.
